Who We Are...
I'm sure everyone has seen or heard about Chris Rock's Good Hair movie. After witnessing the negative depiction of black women and their hair in Good Hair and on several talk shows, a few members of a popular online community joined forces to create, Sistas with Strands (SwS).
Sistas with Strands is a group of fabulous, black women working together in effort to change the way people perceive black women and their hair. We aim to dispel myths that black women can't have healthy, long hair. We intend to showcase black women with healthy hair at a variety of hair types, textures, colors, lengths, and state (relaxed, natural, bkt'd, texlaxed, loc'd). It is also our goal to help promote black-owned hair businesses. Although black women spend more than $1.7 billion on hair care products, 80% of the hair care industry is dominated by Korean-owned businesses.
Black hair care products make up the largest single group of this market. In 2004, sales of black hair care products exceeded $1.7 billion, as reported by Mintel International Group, a consumer research company. This figure does not include the synthetic and human hair additions that have gained tremendous popularity in recent years. Koreans dominate the industry with control of more than 80% of the distribution of black hair care products, beauty supply stores and the wig and extension manufacturers. (Pettigrew)
The reality of the situation is that all black women do not wear weaves. Some black women that wear weaves don't do so because they're 'weavaholics' that don't appreciate the beauty of their real hair. Some black women choose to wear weaves primarily as a protective style. When their real hair is protected under the weave, they have the ability to maintain the health of their real hair underneath the weave. By following simple regimens, weaves can help protect their real hair from heat and other potentially damaging agents while retaining and achieving healthy, longer lengths. All black women do not have relaxed hair. There are many natural, black women with a variety of beautiful textures and lengths. All black women do not have short, damaged hair. Some black women choose to keep their hair short simply as a styling option. Whether it's short or long, relaxed, natural, texlaxed, loc'd, or bkt'd, we intend to celebrate with black women that have used healthy hair practices to grow and maintain beautiful black hair.
SwS is currently recruiting black women to participate in our campaign by submitting pictures and video testimonials of their hair. If any lovely ladies are interested in participating, please visit the testimonials section for more information.
Long hair is not required to join our group. We are welcoming every black woman regardless of hair texture, hair color, hair length, whether you are relaxed, natural, transitioning, texlaxed, bkt'd, or loc'd.
Please join today to support our campaign! Help support our mission of helping to educate, promote, inspire, and encourage black women to grow and nurture their hair.It is our hope that healthy hair practices learned and promoted will be extended to our next generation of "Sistas", our daughters, sisters, grandkids. We can prove to be a driving force to help inspire the next generation to love and appreciate the unique beauty of their natural hair. If their personal decision is to relax their hair, we want to serve as a resource to provide the necessary knowledge and techniques to have healthy, long hair.
Let's stop talking about it, and be about it!
